Traveling with kitty
We understand that bringing your cat to visit us or getting in the car for any trip can be stressful for everyone in the family. We hope these tips help make any trip more enjoyable. Please don’t let this stand in the way of getting veterinary attention for your cat.
Call us, we can help.
Tip No. 1
Plan well in advance by having a suitable cat carrier on hand – call us for advice. Allow your cat to investigate, explore and get used to your carrier – leave it in spots where it can be easily accessed.
Tip No. 2
Make this carrier a safe and relaxing place for your cat by having a favourite, cosy towel or blanket in soft pastel colours. Non-patterned pastel colours are more relaxing for our pets.
Tip No. 3
Place toys and treats inside – or even feed your cat inside the carrier. Spraying a product called Feliway™ inside can also help. (We stock Feliway™ and can give you some tips on usage). Leave the door open and only try closing it for short periods of time when your cat appears comfortable.
Tip No. 4
Encourage your cat to spend time inside the carrier. Move it to different locations – try high locations such as tables or bench tops where they can have a great view of everything that is going on. You may like to progress to having short sessions in the car too – without driving anywhere.
Tip No. 5
On the day of travel – give yourself lots of time to get your cat inside the carrier. Aim to keep the carrier as secure and stable as possible whilst you are driving. Covering it with a blanket will reduce stress. If you are running late or encounter any problems just give us a call. We are here to help!
